What is Place Making?

The Melbourne Place Making Series took place over a seven month period between April and October 2010 and included:

Background
Unprecedented population growth and changes in the way we live present challenges for the future development and shape of our cities.

Place making is a deliberate effort to create cities that are desirable and liveable for everyone; places that stand the test of time.

This Series focuses on encouraging the many disciplines involved in creating cities to test the contribution place making can make to our future.

A successful place must be created in such a way that it can respond to changing needs over time. It needs not only to be resilient but to prosper with change.

The Melbourne Place Making Series aims to transform how we approach the creation of our future cities and communities, and develop new models for urban development around themes such as accommodating population growth, design, social and economic development, environmental sustainability and community building.

Seven months of lively pre-conference discussions involving the development, community and finance sectors informed the conference program, which culminated with delegates and partners collaborating to suggest a way forward.

The outcomes of the Series will be published here in the coming weeks.
