With all the talk about our population growing and the threat of Melbourne’s urban sprawl taking off I believe we need to look at the ‘middle ring’ suburbs such as Nunawading and look at ways we can entice people to those areas.
Now that the railway line goes underground and the new station is completed access to the city is great. The eastern freeway gives further access to the city or the southern areas such as Frankston.
Families who need more space than is available in inner city areas could be encouraged to buy or rent in the middle suburbs. Infrastructure such as schools, childcare, public transport, shops and freeways are already in place.
I believe that Nunawading, should be marketed to young families as a more affordable and viable alternative to the inner east suburbs of Blackburn, Box Hill etc.
Nunwading, Forest Hill, East Burwood are being overlooked by many potential renters and buyers because they are unaware of the convenience available to them at a fair price.

With the anticipated growth of Victoria over the next 20-50 years, “middle ring suburbs” such as Nunawading are in a great position to establish a role as a true “activity centre”, involving the development of true population and economic centres. The challenge, however, is to ascertain the true role of Nunawading in the urban fabric of the Melbourne Metropolitan Region, not competing with other centres but developing upon its own natural advantages to create a centre where people will not only want to live but also work and play. This necessariliy involves a cooperative effort between the public and private sector, as well as a strong level of community involvement and commitment. Only in this manner can true urban growth take place in confidence and not subject to the vagaries of energy availability and fuel pricing.
Brian…As one of the 110 designated “Activity Centres” under Melbourne 2030 Nunawading’s role in the future as a growth centre is already defined.
The challenge now is to avoid the current dysfunctional approach to redeveloping areas like Nunawading.
Activity Centres like Nunawading quickly need to become the platform that brings together all stakeholders in a co-ordinated approach to sustainable urban infrastructure and building redevelopment.
Cheers ….John
